Description |
Susan Grabel has been a presence on Staten Island and in the greater artistic community of New York since 1970. Over the last 50 years, she has been articulating her political and social activism through her art. Constructions of Conscience: The Social Art of Susan Grabel was her solo exhibition at the Museum in 2012. The Venus Cycle is an ongoing tribute/effort to destigmatize the aging female body. In 2012, Grabel stated, "In the late 1990's and into the new century, I became increasingly aware of changes in my own body and the lack of positive images out there of aging women…. [ The Venus Cycle] explores the unidealized reality of the older woman’s body. Using humor and repetition of forms to normalize the aging woman’s body, I create sculptures that also show its beauty." |
