Description |
Leonard Baskin was educated at the New York University School of Applied Arts and the New School for Social Research and later served in the United States Navy. Although sculpture was a major part of Baskin’s art, he originally gained recognition in graphic design. He worked in woodcuts, primarily for book illustration. He was the founder of the Gehenna Press (1942-2000) in Massachusetts and was a major force in the revitalization of small American presses. Baskin’s posters and other graphic art are powerfully direct in exploring the full range of form and expression of social themes in print. |
