Description |
In 2019, Raphael Soyer’s Girl with Flowers was added to the Museum’s collection of portraits by prominent artists connected to New York City from the mid-20th century. Soyer’s portraits convey a sense of quiet introspection. The model for this portrait, a woman named Marcia, was a model for a number of his portraits. Soyer immigrated to the United States from Russia in 1912 at the age of 12. After studying at Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design, and the Arts Students League, Soyer became an artist grounded in social realism, communicating the gritty energy of New York City and the emotions of its working class and immigrant population. |
