Description |
William Henry Powell's commissioned portrait of George Law depicts him surrounded by the fruits of his various enterprises. Law was an engineer who owned and operated the Staten Island Ferry and Staten Island Railroad, both of which are indicated in the middle distance. He sold part of his vast property to the developer Erastus Wiman, who is credited in popular legend for naming St. George after Law. Law also financed the Croton Falls Aqueduct and the High Bridge over the Harlem River, indicated in the far distance. Born in New York, William Henry Powell was a prominent American artist, whose historical painting Discovery of the Mississippi by De Soto hangs in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. |
