Description |
Born in Pennsylvania in 1871, John Sloan came to New York in 1904. By 1908, he was one of a group known as the Ashcan School, along with William Glackens, George Luks, Robert Henri, and Everett Shinn. He participated in the landmark Armory Show of 1913 and while influenced by European painting movements seen there, he did not imitate them. In 1914, he began teaching at the Art Students League where he taught Alexander Calder, David Smith, Reginald Marsh, and Barnet Newman. Everyday experiences of city life were a common theme in his work. Working class people are shown going about their daily routine, waiting in lines, doing chores, travelling to and from work, documenting life in the early and mid-20th century. |
