Description |
Using the traditional Chinese folk art of paper-cutting, artist Xin Song created this delicate paper representation of Avalokiteshvara, sitting in a peaceful and meditative posture, her many arms arranged around her, contained within a rosette shape. This piece was created for the Museum’s 2016 exhibition, Infinite Compassion: Avalokiteshvara in Asian Art. Over time and geographically, Avalokiteshvara has taken on both male and female identities, and, based on Chinese models, this figure is female. Placed over a large, sun-filled window, light infuses the design through the delicate holes of the cut white paper, making the image seem a celestial apparition. |
