Description |
Allen Tucker was a founding member of the Association of American Painters and Sculptors that organized the groundbreaking Armory Exhibition of Modern Art in 1913. He was part of a group of artists concerned with representing the city and modern life realistically, through an unfiltered lens. This portrait, Study in Rose and Black, was one of five paintings by Tucker exhibited at the Armory Show. Before World War I, American art was shifting from Edwardian formality to a bohemian sensuality, and this woman, boldly staring at the viewer, dressed in loose and flowing clothes, could easily represent the New Woman, a symbol of the women’s rights movement. |
