Description |
Mabel Dwight’s lithograph is a vivid reminder of a bygone era. The Greek Revival home is overwhelmed by new industrial complexes, trolley lines, automobiles, telephone poles, and gas tanks. This was a timely image, made on the eve of the stock market crash that began the Great Depression. Dwight was born in Cincinnati and studied printmaking in Paris, eventually moving to Staten Island, where she made several lithographs including The Survivor. She participated in the Federal Art Project, an initiative of the federally funded Works Progress Administration that sought to employ artists during the Depression. She died at the age of 79 in Pennsylvania. |
