Description |
Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, a member of the Vanderbilt family, was a professional sculptor and a patron of the arts, who financially supported, collected, and exhibited young American artists. The Whitney Studio, which she founded in 1914, evolved into the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1930. Whitney's Head of a Spanish Peasant was accepted into the Paris Salon in 1911 and cast editions of the work were widely collected by museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This expressive bronze, cast in 1915, was donated to Staten Island Museum by the Whitney Museum of American Art in September 1954. |
