Title |
Ornithology Bell Jar |
Object Name |
Jar, Bell |
Description |
This object contains bird species that are native to the Northeast, like the northern flicker, Baltimore oriole, oven bird, indigo bunting, yellow-breasted chat and Eastern bluebird, as well as 4 exotic species. The birds are in excellent condition and the assemblage has good exhibition value and historical significance. The glass dome was a popular and practical motif during the Victorian era because homes had gaslights, coal fires, and no window screens to keep soot and dirt off the specimens. It would have been displayed in the parlor, which was the center of family life. |
