Description |
Staten Islanders remember Edith Susskind as a larger-than-life personality, a "Gift Specialist," a boa-wearing business woman, and benefactor for education and the arts. She was also an avid collector and connoisseur of decorative arts, particularly porcelain. This pair of Sèvres style, 19th century French porcelain ornithological dessert dishes are painted with birds on a bleu celeste ground. These dishes reflect the 19th century fascination with exploring, identifying, and classifying the natural world with decorative motifs of real birds. They are part of the Edith and Alfred Susskind Porcelain Collection bequeathed to the Museum in 2014. |
