Description |
Jasper Cropsey was the son of a farmer in Rossville, Staten Island in 1823. He first trained as an architect and designed a number of structures, including the chapel at Moravian Cemetery. In 1849, he moved to upstate New York to focus on painting landscapes. In this painting, Cropsey’s sweeping panorama encompasses the hills of Staten Island, the planted fields of the Vanderbilt Estate (now the Richmond County Country Club) in the middle distance, and the sea beyond. Great Kills can be seen on the shoreline. In the far distance, Sandy Hook and Coney Island are visible. Considered one of the most important second-generation Hudson River School painters, his last works have been called the swan songs of this movement in American art. |
