Description |
Andrea Phillips’ collage, Yoga in Silver Lake intertwines spirit, humanity, and creativity. This work was included in her 2011 exhibition at the Museum, Andrea Phillips, Pieces of Spirit. Her art took shape when she started to piece scraps of fabric into functional items for the family, such as clothing, quilts, and rugs. Her method was influenced by what her husband and mother-in-law told her about the rural South. In time, the piecing developed into pictorial quilts and then collages. She collaborates with her son, Saint, who creates the unique frames that are integral to her work. She is primarily self-taught and is inspired by African-American artists Bob Thompson and Romare Bearden. |
