Description |
This painting shows the Village of Richmond in Staten Island, the county seat until 1919, as it appeared in the mid-19th century. It includes Saint Andrews Church prior the fire of 1868, the church’s graveyard, the 1837 Greek Revival courthouse, shops, and homes. Dense woods surround the village, which had been established at an inland crossroads. The Village of Richmond, lacking transport connections to the rest of New York City, was replaced as the seat of local government by St. George, which had ferry connections to Manhattan. |
