In tribute to the efforts, drive and passion of these inspired people, I paint them in their chosen surroundings. My images aim to uncap the philosophies and worth of those who quietly study the underpinnings of our world, bringing more of it to us. Sarah Yuster Bruce Brock Statement: 2007 "Deer heads are my bread and butter, but I could never kill an animal," Bruce Brock explains, as he works meticulously on one of his pieces. His particular specialty is fish, evident in the gleaming, leaping specimens suspended in creative displays scattered about his studio. Brock and his siblings grew up with Mariners Marsh as their back yard. "We were always out exploring, fishing, camping, running around in the woods. We hardly ever went in, if we did, our mother would find chores for us to do, so we stayed outdoors all the time." Early acquaintance with habitats and wildlife provided a background for understanding the finer points of designing museum exhibits. Extensive knowledge of animal anatomy is the final key to accuracy in his work. Formal Training in architecture and interior design at a NYC specialized high school and Pratt University was the initial goal of the artist. However, interim work at Ceramic Tile, where Brock discovered a talent and enjoyment for painting decorative tiles and creating mosaics led to a lateral move. Opting to remain in Mariners Harbor and raise his children there, he's now an activist for the Marsh. When the Conservancy made it a recreation area, Brock joined them in the effort. His personal investment will help to ensure that this patch of wetlands will remain as wonderful a place for others to commune with the natural world as it has been for three generations of his own family. |
