Description |
Diana Horowitz paints urban landscapes, working outdoors, in natural light. Her small canvases capture movement of natural forms interacting with built structures. Created specifically for Staten Island Museum’s inaugural exhibition at Snug Harbor, Staten Island Seen, this painting shows the Atlantic Salt Company’s site on Richmond Terrace at the mouth of the Kill van Kull. Two large salt mounds on the water’s edge figure prominently here, bookending the abandoned U.S. Gypsum plant, since demolished. The artist painted on the spot, capturing the fleeting qualities of light. Horowitz recorded this changing shoreline, documenting the addition of industrial structures and creating a visual flow between the natural world and human impact. |
