Description |
In 1977, Bill Murphy became friends with John Noble (1913-1983), a draftsman and printmaker. The young artist admired Noble's disciplined renderings of Staten Island's coastal landscape. Murphy recalled, "I remember bringing a watercolor study for the portrait of Noble over to his house on Richmond Terrace, down by the water. He looked at it for a long while, announcing ‘this might be just the thing to get Suzy up and around.’" Noble’s wife, Sue, was terminally ill at the time. Murphy was born and raised on Staten Island and is the former Chairman of the Art Department at Wagner College. He continues to be a major force in the local arts community. In 2002, the Staten Island Museum held a retrospective of his work, Bill Murphy: Works on Paper 1980-2002. |
