Description |
When New Yorkers sought an escape from the hot, densely populated neighborhoods of the other boroughs, many took a ferry and train ride to Staten Island's South Beach. At the turn of the 20th century, the area was a summer retreat, and carnivals and amusement parks such as Happyland, which opened in 1906, were a major attraction. South Beach boasted sun, surf, rides, restaurants, carnival games, live music, and dancing, but the resorts and amusements there suffered during the Great Depression. |
