Description |
Donated to the Museum by the Kress Foundation in 1961 as part of a gift of five paintings, this secular painting reflects the resurgence of portraiture in the Renaissance and the influence of Flemish bust-length portraits on Italian painters. The sitter’s facial features and long neck are characteristic of the Florentine Mannerist style, reflecting the artistic ideals of the time. Her clothing indicates that she was from a wealthy household, where servants would have been necessary to help her into her dress. Portraits of this type would have hung in the home or were exchanged as a gift before marriage in the betrothal ritual. |
