Description |
Susan Grabel is a prominent artist on Staten Island, who has made Staten Island her home and creative center for over 30 years. Grabel is an artist-activist who has held important positions in the Feminist Artists' Movement as President of the NY chapter of The Women's Caucus for Art (WCA) an outgrowth of the College Art Association. Her work continues to be an exploration of political issues central to women in contemporary culture. Venus Emerging in particular is part of the Venus Cycle Series, exploring non-traditional images of women's bodies, using cast paper. Here the visual metaphor is the body emerging from a chrysalis-like out shell, both images cast from the same mold. The piece is durable, and can be exhibited in relation to several of our collection pieces, in particular the Roman marble torso of Venus. Its hinged appearance can also be compared with small Buddhist portable altars, and other images of goddesses in our collection. This work was exhibited in 2012, part of Constructions of Conscience: The Social Art of Susan Grabel. Artist id: VE002 |
