Description |
The first Foreign Trade Zone in the United States opened in Stapleton on February 1, 1937. These Zones were created to help companies reduce or delay duty payments on foreign merchandise to encourage economic activity in the United States. Netherlands East Indies tobacco interests financed a tobacco storage building called American Frascati in Staten Island's zone. The engineers Walter Jordan and his partners Arthur Dean and Frederick Safford built the facility. The Museum's Foreign Trade Zone Collection consists of Jordan's papers from before and during the construction of the warehouse. |
