Description |
Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) was an innovator in the field of landscape architecture. He is widely known for his design of Central Park in Manhattan and Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Olmsted lived in a colonial era farmhouse in the Eltingville neighborhood of Staten Island in the mid-1800s. After Olmsted left, local entrepreneur Erastus Wiman purchased the estate and turned it into a summer resort called Woods of Arden. It is now a New York City Landmark, owned by the New York City Parks Department and administered by the Friends of Olmsted-Beil House. Olmsted returned to the Island in the 1880s to design the Vanderbilt Mausoleum grounds. |
