Description |
A series of images in the Museum's photography collection appear to be, at first glance, simply rather charming. The images feature boulders in wooded places with a man's hat placed on top. In actuality, this was William T. Davis' method for recording glacial erratics, large boulders moved to Staten Island from upstate New York and Canada by the Wisconsin glacier. When he took the pictures, he placed whatever hat he was wearing on top to act as a scale. Without the hat, the photograph was just an image of a rock, with no sense of how big it was. Front cover: Black and white copy negative of a large boulder (with a hat resting on it to show its size). The boulder is at the base of a bluff near Wards Point in Tottenville. Trees and fallen branches surround the boulder. Back of photo: " Feby 16-1913. Large boulder at base of bluff near Wards Pt., Tottenville, S.I.,N.Y." (Written by William T. Davis) |
