From a series of aerial photographs commissioned by Borough President Cornelius Hall and taken by W.O. Davies, this photograph depicts construction work taking place near Crooke's Point in Great Kills. In 1934, City Parks Commissioner Robert Moses spearheaded a project to use city waste to fill in the salt meadow that connected Crooke's Point to Staten Island and to build Marine Park, now Great Kills Park, on top of the newly-filled wetland. At the time, city planners did not understand wetlands' functions as natural resources for combatting pollution and managing storm water. Instead they saw wetlands as sources of insect-borne disease. After much controversy and slowdowns caused by the wartime shortages, the park opened in 1949. |
