Front Cover: "Vanderbilt Mausoleum, Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. Staten Island, N.Y." Publ. by W.J. Grimshaw Description: Sepia-tone postcard of a large mausoleum with steps leading up to entrances under three arches. Ivy covers some of the structure. Trees surround the Vanderbilt mausoleum. Back Cover: "The Albertype Co. Brooklyn, N.Y." The Vanderbilt Mausoleum was built as the centerpiece of the Vanderbilt family’s private cemetery, adjacent to Moravian Cemetery on Staten Island. The family traces their wealth to Cornelius Vanderbilt, who began his transportation empire with a ferry route between Staten Island, where he was born and raised, and Manhattan. Vanderbilt expanded his business into shipping and railroads. His son, William H. Vanderbilt, further expanded the business, becoming the wealthiest man in America. Cornelius, William, and their heirs are buried in the mausoleum, and the cemetery is still in use by the family. The plot was designed by famed architects Richard Morris Hunt and Frederick Law Olmstead and is landmarked. |
