Earle, Olive L. |
Summary |
Olive Earle was born in England and spent her childhood exploring, observing, and sketching the natural world. Earle moved to New York City in 1911. In 1934, she was hired by the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Art Project to create murals for the reptile house at the new Staten Island Zoo. She fell in love with Island’s open spaces and made it her home. In 1953, the Museum published a field guide she wrote and illustrated, Plants and Animals of Staten Island, which warned of species loss and sounded a call to arms to preserve the environment. She wrote and illustrated over 20 nature books during her lifetime. |
