Title |
Panoramic view of New Brighton for the New Brighton Association |
Object Name |
Lithograph |
Scope & Content |
This print was created to market the properties of the New Brighton Association, a real estate company founded by Thomas E. Davis in 1836. The neighborhood would evolve into a microcosm of mid-19th century America. The residents were immigrant workers in households and at nearby factories, as well as progressive, anti-slavery writers and thinkers who had moved to the West New Brighton section from Massachusetts. Neighborhood resorts such as the Pavilion Hotel became fashionable summer destinations for Southern planters, who were often accompanied by enslaved domestic servants, leading to a contentious environment as national tensions over slavery increased. |
