Object Name |
Directory |
Scope & Content |
Two index card boxes with census information about African American residents of Staten Island. In 1981, Genealogist and Historian Richard B. Dickenson published Census Occupations of Afro-American Families on Staten Island, 1840-1875. In the course of his research, Dickenson compiled this card catalog with information from the 1855, 1860, 1865, and 1870 State and Federal Censuses. The catalog is a part of the Museum's Directories Collection. Dickenson, along with Staten Island Museum Archivist Gail Schneider and local historians Clarence Overton and Evelyn Morris King, was instrumental in the "Black Man on Staten Island (BMOSI)" Initiative, founded in 1969 to document the history of the Black community on Staten Island. Ultimately, the collection was transferred to Sandy Ground Historical Society. See multimedia to view PDFs of the scanned cards. |
