William Olliffe's Diary |
Object Name |
Diary |
Scope & Content |
From 1862 to 1864, Staten Islander William Olliffe kept a diary documenting his experiences working at the Tompkinsville ferry landing during the Civil War. He noted the changing cost to ride the ferry; dignitaries and military officers visiting Staten Island; troop movements; weather patterns; and the bubbling undercurrent of political, economic, and racial tension existing within a community and a nation at war. Notably, Olliffe wrote a harrowing account of the Civil War draft riots that raged on Staten Island in July 1863.
