Scope & Content |
Photogrpah album containing 33 photographs of members of the Kreicher Family. In 1948, Louise Kreischer donated her family’s papers, including this photo album featuring several generations of Kreischers, to the Museum. The family’s patriarch Balthasar Kreischer emigrated to New York in 1836. Balthasar and three of his sons—George (the donor’s father), Charles, and Edward—owned B. Kreischer and Sons, a firebrick company on Staten Island. A daughter, Louise (the donor’s aunt), married Albert Steinway of Steinway & Sons piano makers. Through the Kreischers’ investment, a factory town called Kreischerville arose around the clayworks. However, WWI era anti-German sentiment led the area to change to its current name of Charleston. A few of the Kreischerville buildings remain and are landmarked. |
