Object Name |
Indenture |
Scope & Content |
In March of 1675, Edmund Andros, the English Governor of New York from 1674 to 1680, granted 178 acres of land on Staten Island's South Shore to Jacques Guyon, a French Huguenot merchant and farmer. The document is signed by Andros and Matthias Nicoll, Secretary of New York. Guyon's land encompassed much of the modern-day neighborhood of Oakwood and some of Great Kills, including Crooke's Point, the peninsula that forms Great Kills Harbor. The Guyon family remained on the land until the early 20th century. Present-day Guyon Avenue traces its name to this family. See multimedia to download a PDF transcript. |
