The first of two columes of journals by Arthur Hollick, a paleo-botanist, geologist, and one of the founders of the Natural Science Association, predecessor of the Staten Island Museum. Thhe journals contain field notes, anecdotes, and insights on the founders' vision for building a local museum. Hollick served as the Association's first Correspondence Secretary and later as Director of the Museum from 1914 - 1919. He contributed a great deal to the creation of the Museum's archival and herbarium collections.In 1909, he acquired a mastodon's tooth, found near Moravian Cemetery on Staten Island, for the Museum's collection. The Museum's mastodon replica is named Hollick in his honor. |
