Title |
Broadside endorsing Aaron Burr for Governor of New York |
Object Name |
Broadside |
Scope & Content |
Aaron Burr was inaugurated the third Vice President of the United States under President Thomas Jefferson in 1801. In 1804, Jefferson replaced Burr with political rival and fellow New Yorker George Clinton. Thus, Burr announced his run for Governor of New York that year. At the time, only male landowners were allowed to vote in New York State. The Museum’s copy of this broadside endorsing Burr for Governor is addressed to Richard Conner Jr., a surveyor, proprietor of a sawmill, and owner of three enslaved people. Burr moved to the St. James Hotel in Port Richmond at the end of his life to be close to his relative, Judge Ogden Edwards. He died there in 1836. |
