Scope & Content |
Ye Olde Names and Nicknames was a project of Staten Island Museum founders William T. Davis and Charles Leng to collect formal, historical, and colloquial names for roads, neighborhoods, and natural features around Staten Island. Published in 1896, the project produced a map and accompanying booklet explaining the origins of the names it features. The parenthetical title of the map includes Aquehonga Manacknong a Lenape name for the Island. The map is an important resource for deciphering the field notes and publications produced by the founders and their contemporaries. Still, it is a product of its time and records some names and notations that have racist and colonialist origins. See multimedia for a link to the accompanying pamphlet on Internet Archive. |
