This document reveals that a sixteen-year-old boy named Toen was enslaved by Abraham Aikerman of New Jersey and sold to Cornelius Coursen of Staten Island in 1763. Abridged Transcript: Know all men by these presents that I, Abraham Johan Ackerman of the Precinct of Newbarbados in the County of Bergen and Province of East New Jersey, yoman for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and five pounds current lawful money of New York to one in hand paid by Cornelius Coursen of Staten Island in the province of New York. Whereof I do hereby acknowledge the receipt and myself therewith fully and entirely satisfied…and deliver unto the said Cornelius Coursen a negro lad – named Toen, aged about sixteen years to have and to hold the said negro lad unto the said Cornelius Coursen his executors, administrators or assigns to the only proper use and behoof of him the said Cornelius Coursen, his executors, administrators and assigns forever. And I the said Abraham Ackerman for myself… will warrant and forever defend by these presents in witness whereof together with the delivery of the bargained premises I have here unto set my hand and seal the Eighteenth Day of October in the third year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the third and in the year of our Lord 1763. |
