"The remains of our beloved President are being brought to the city at this hour. 11 o'clock. The bells are tolling. Streets crowded with people," wrote Elizabeth Moffat as she observed Abraham Lincoln's funeral procession in Albany, New York on April 25, 1865. Moffat kept a diary chronicling her life as a wife, mother, and volunteer on the home front during the Civil War. The diary came into the Museum's collection with the papers of Henry B. Brownell, an early member of the Museum, who married Moffat's daughter Martha. It is assumed that Martha brought the diary with her to Staten Island, preserving it as an important piece of her family's history. |
